David Amram Highlights Film Event on January 27th
Legendary jazz musician, composer and performer David Amram will headline a screening of the beat film classic “Pull My Daisy,” sponsored by The Seligmann Center for Surrealism at the Orange County Citizens Foundation, 23 White Oak Dr., Friday evening, January 27th at 7:30 p.m. The film series is free of charge and the public is encouraged to attend. This event is sponsored by the Orange County Citizens Foundation and the Orange County Arts Council. Mr. Amram wrote the music and performed in the 1959 film, which was directed by painter and filmmaker Alfred Leslie, filmed by documentary photographer Robert Frank and based on a play by Jack Kerouac. “Pull My Daisy” is a short film that typifies the Beat Generation. Jack Kerouac provided improvised narration for the film. Along with David Amram, “Pull My Daisy” starred poets Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky and Gregory Corso, artists Larry Rivers and Alice Neel, actors Richard Bellamy and Delphine Seyrig , dancer Sally Gross, and Pablo Frank, Robert Frank's then-young son. Renowned poet Janet Hamill will provide an introduction to the film. After the sreening, a selection of Kerouac’s poetry will be read by Mr. Amram, Ms. Hamill, poet/actors Joe Aniska (“Boardwalk Empire”), Michael Sean Collins and Frank Messina, all to the musical accompaniment of Mr. Amram. In conclusion, Mr. Amram will engage in a Q & A with the audience. This event is the first in a series of film evenings that will be held January through April on the last Friday of each month at 7:30 p.m. On February 24th, the Seligmann Center for Surrealism will feature the 1964 film “The Last Clean Shirt,” by Alfred Leslie and poet Frank O’Hara. Tom Weddell Receives 2012 Ruth and James Ottaway Medal
The Orange County Citizens Foundation has announced that Newburgh resident Tom Weddell has been named the 2012 Ruth and James Ottaway Medal recipient. Mr. Weddell will be honored with the prestigious quality of life award at a dinner reception on April 26th in Central Valley. The public is invited to attend. Mr. Weddell was born and raised in Orange County and is now the managing partner of the accounting firm Vanacore, DeBenedictus, DiGovanni and Weddell. “Tom’s passion for Orange County has been a driving force in our community,” said Citizens Foundation Chairman Paul Ernenwein. “He always strive to improve quality of life Orange County and never shies away from the hard work necessary to get the job done.” Mr. Weddell’s volunteer leadership roles are vast, serving in community-wide organizations like the United Way, the Orange County Citizens Foundation, the Newburgh Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the Greater Southern Dutche ...
